Huon Bush Retreats has adopted a small and cute new orphan; Lucy, the Rufous Wallaby.

Lucy’s mother was killed in a road incident in the Huon Valley area. She was delivered to us by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service at a very young age and we are taking on the responsibility of raising her, as a recognised and experienced wildlife carer premise, to ensure she has the best chance in life.

We are in a fortunate position to be able to hand raise Lucy. Due to the natural bushland surrounding the property, it makes the transition period of release much easier. As Lucy ages, she will be free to come and go via our cat flaps and venture outside the building to explore the surrounding bush!

We estimate Lucy is about 5 months old and were just furred when rescued from her mother’s pouch. Her tiny body is just 20 centimetres long and tail only 15 centimetres, so she still has plenty of growing to do - a Rufous Wallaby (or Tasmanian Pademelon), grows to a head and body length of 60cm and a tail length of 41cm. The average weight for males is 7kg and females, 4kg.

Luckily for Lucy, there are plenty of other Rufous Wallabies in our reserve and we are accepting the fact that one day she may not decide come back home!

The iconic image of the Aussie surfer is being challenged with the launch of a new website for gay surfers. The long-overdue site welcomes queer surfers from Australia and abroad to join its forums and chat about everything from coming-out experiences as a surfer through to the best hidden wave-riding spots in the country.

Gaysurfers.net webmaster, Thomas, launched the site after being frustrated while trying to locate an online site where gay surfers could become part of network. Within the first six months of its launch the site has already signed up 2800 members from over 76 countries. The daily membership growth reflects the relevance of the underground queer surfing culture that has remained relatively closeted to date.

The site is designed for men and women, but right now the guys are outnumbering the gals. All ages also seem to be jumping on board, with profiles identifying surfers in their teens to those listed merely as “experienced.”

Whether you like to longboard or boogie, the site allows you to contribute your thoughts and comments. The idea of a gay surfer is no longer a fantasy character in porn, but an everyday reality.

A former Sydney native, he’s a man of many trades – and tricks – with careers in the world of modelling and prestige porn under his belt as his stage name Fillippo Romano. Charterers to bid for cruise holidays online

The Whitsundays' longest operating bareboat charter company, Whitsunday Rent A Yacht (WRAY), has launched an online auction site directly targeting holiday makers in a marketing move unique to the bareboat industry.

Modelled on the successful formula of eBay, the auction site gives prospective holiday makers the chance to bid on a Whitsundays holiday aboard selected vessels on offer.

WRAY general manager, Alexandra Hawson, said the auction site would offer good-value opportunities to encourage Australians to holiday at home and explore a world-class environment in their own country while supporting the domestic tourism industry.

"In these challenging tourism times, clever interactive online marketing strategies will help give operators a competitive edge," Ms Hawson said.

"WRAY's auction site gives charterers the chance to tell us how much they are prepared to pay for a Whitsundays holiday and provides an appealing, exciting and engaging way of booking.

"It also introduces bidders to our range of motor cruisers, yachts and catamarans in a very user friendly, direct way."

Ms Hawson said the auction site - accessible via the home page of WRAY's website at www.rentayacht.com.au - would present ongoing options at regular intervals throughout the year.

Multiple bids are accepted with each auction running for three days. Successful bidders will be advised of their win by WRAY after auctions close.

"Our website has always attracted high visitations - this move adds value to the experience for visitors," Ms Hawson said.

She said the auction site would be supported by dedicated social media marketing campaigns.

Established in 1979, WRAY is one of the largest yacht rental companies in the country. It is also the only operator in the region to have its own private jetty at Shute Harbour, one of the safest and largest natural harbours in the region. WRAY’s private jetty provides ease of access and allows charterers to acquaint themselves with their vessel and the area in tranquil and relaxed surrounds. Within an hour of departing the harbour, charterers can be moored at one of four island resorts or anchored in a quiet, secluded bay.

New Mardi Gras (NMG) today announced that it is pleased with a vigorous debate on its fundraising plans at the Member & Community Forum held on Saturday 23rd October at Heffron Hall.

NMG had invited the community along to consider the direction of events such as Sleaze, Hallowe’en, and Party as primary fundraising sources, in addition to new opportunities with Parade, Fair Day and other activities that could support Mardi Gras in the coming years.

Around 50 people heard NMG CEO Michael Rolik and Co-chairs Peter Urmson and Steph Sands set out the recent fundraising history of the organisation and their view of the challenges ahead.

“The truth is that when you factor all aspects of the party, the marketing spend and the amount of staff time it takes to put it on, that it hasn’t really raised significant funds for years and this year lost us a significant amount of money,” said NMG CEO Michael Rolik.

“The question is not just Sleaze or no Sleaze. There are other options for us and in some ways to remove Sleaze Ball from the calendar might make it more plausible for the organization to pursue those other opportunities.”

Amongst the suggestions from the floor for Sleaze were to work with other promoters to create a Sleaze festival, finding a new venue and looking at a move to a different weekend.

Other ideas for fundraising included virtual mobile telecoms provision, running a series of Fair Day-type events through the year, introducing more events aimed at an older audience who no longer attend dance parties and setting up an event on the June long weekend.

“There was an encouraging level of engagement with the difficult choices we face,” said Peter Urmson, Co-chair of NMG. “The Parade is the absolute core of what we are about and I think the community appreciates that we must do whatever is necessary to ensure its future. There can be no sacred cows.”

WoofClub is an Australian idea.

Starting from one party in Melbourne in 2005 with less than 150 guys, WoofClub has now been held in 5 cities across Australia & the US and now has a membership list of 5000 worldwide.

The idea came out of the Sydney dance scene around the time of the Gay Games (2002) but it wasn't until 2005 that it started first in Melbourne by taking the unprecendented step of becoming an independent dance party at Melbourne's leather cruise club: Club80.

After 2 parties at 80 and because of sound restrictions, WoofClub successfully made the move to other pubs and clubs such as The GlassHouse Hotel, The Opium Den (formerly Star Hotel), Tunnel Nightclub (where we held our biggest party in Melbourne yet entitled "Sniffer Dogs on the Door"), Royal Melbourne Hotel (the former Bourke Street West police Station), The Laird (Melbourne's leather & denim bar, now running for nearly 30 years) and ABODE (Melbourne's pan-sexual leather & fetish club in the former red-light neighbourhood known as St Kilda).

Then after quite a break, WoofClub came back to Club 80 in 2008, presenting one of the signature events for the inaugural/ revamped Melbourne Leather Pride in September of that year and then running a string of dance parties up to and including 2009's Melbourne Leather Pride.

In Melbourne, we're now also using The Wah Wah Lounge which apart from its old warehouse vibe has the largest (some might say psychedlic) wall/ceiling lighting feature of its kind in the world.

After a 6 month search for a suitable & available venue, Sydney's WoofClub started about a year after Melbourne's at Kinsela's Middlebar; a glitzy cocktail lounge turned dark and sexy with substantial stagings of black pallets. Most of the events at MiddleBar were held on Sunday afternoons as Recovery parties to the large (and then hugely successful) dance parties such as Mardi Gras & Sydney Leather Pride's Inquisition.

With "competition" only from long-time successes such as Indulgence at The Midnight Shift (which ran in the night-time time-slot), WoofClub gained a steady following in Sydney before finally moving to the subterranean (and somewhat abandoned) Phoenix for Sleaze Ball Recovery in October 2006.

The night named "Dark Durty Hole" was such a success that it, along with "Action" (a night run by fellow gay community promoters/organisers) became the start of a new once-a-month format at that venue which later saw the addition of other promoters such as Mandy Rollins with her highly successful "Dirty" nights to become Sydney's only Saturday night gay nightclub operating weekly with non-commercial music in 2007.

In late 2007, Dark Durty Hole changed it's name to WoofClub's DogPound (a name originally used for WoofClub's Bar Night, upstairs at the now-defunct Newtown Hotel) and continued for a year or so until finally coming to an end in Dec 2008.

During this time however, the WoofClub dance party continued in Sydney at unlikely venues such as the high-tech arena ARQ: with lighting designed by Allan Parkinson. Large amounts of hanging black rubber were brought in especially for the party and this was then to form the decor backbone of subsequent WoofClubs at the Oxford Hotel, the Midnight Shift & The Gaelic Glub. (Interestingly, this rubber originally came from Melbourne's parties for which a whole new set was made.)

Sydney's 3rd birthday was held in Dec 2008 at the new Manacle (Sydney's leather bar formerly of Taylor Square - originally trading as The Barracks) and then again on various dates throughout 2009 (along with an appearance by the resurrected DogPound dance party which sometimes now makes an appearance in Melbourne too) until Manacle finally closed its doors in October 2009.

Our premier Sydney event is now held every year between February & March, during Sydney's Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras at the "sandstone bunker" on Oxford St formerly known as Rogues Nightclub (now called The Gaff - a british word for "secret").

There have also now been 6 WoofClubs held in Perth, Western Australia, starting first at the now-defunct gay sauna; Beaufort 565 before successfully making the move to one of Perth's "underground" nightclubs in April of 2009: Bar Open.

WoofClub has also been running in the USA since early 2007 (starting first in LA at various underground clubs) and followed by San Francisco's launch party at Club 8 immediately following the Folsom St Fair in October 2007 with DJs Paul Goodyear and Phill Mezzatesta (Melbourne).

This culminated in WoofClub being chosen to be the Closing Party for 2008's world-reknowned "Lazy Bear Weekend" with DJs Ted Eiel (Chicago) & Jeff Lawrence (San Francisco) and then again in 2009 with Ted teaming up with Sydney's George Roussos.

The night, attended by 700 guys is our largest WoofClub to date.

Gay Ski event gets Frostier and Higher in 2010

The Frosty Fruits Ski Trip offers a uniquely Australian Gay Ski experience, only 90
minutes from Sydney.

Following the success of its first year in 2009 at the Thredbo Resort, the event has bigger
and higher plans in 2010. Planned as a Gay & Lesbian Ski Short Week in August, key
developments include moving the event to the Hotham Alpine Resort, developing a
women’s speciality program and direct flights from Sydney on QantasLink!

Organiser Adam Bold from Points of Difference Events, a Gay & Lesbian event
company based in Sydney, said whilst the 2009 event was fantastic, the 6 hour drive was
a deterrent for some people.

“So we researched the best ski fields in Australia, and particularly those you could fly
direct to,” said Bold. “We came up with the Hotham Alpine Resort. Not only can we fly
direct from Sydney to the Hotham airport, the village is located right slap bang on the
snow, on the top of the mountain: It’s Fly In and Ski Out Accommodation! Just walk out
your room, slap on your skis and swoosh off!”

The Hotham Alpine Report has arguably the best ski fields in Australia, and boasts the
only alpine resort within Australia where the village is located ON TOP of the mountain!
The ultimate in ski in-ski out alpine environment; Not to mention the 360 views!

“The Hotham Ski Company are so keen to support us this year, they have come on board
as official Accommodation Supplier and a Presenting Partner”, reports Bold. “This means
we have some great priced accommodation for our members and guests. And great

In addition, currently, Mt. Hotham holds the record for the highest annual snowfall of any
Victorian resort over the past decade.

The Hotham Alpine Resort staff are reportedly all very excited about the arrival of the
Frosty Fruits Ski Trippers. They are working hand-in-hand with the PoDE team to create
a wonderfully wintery warm and welcoming event. A 4-day event program of exciting ski
and non-ski events are being scheduled for guests. Included in this development is a
planned women’s only program.

With support from the luscious lesbians at Avalon Media, publishers of BOUND Magazine,
the organisers plan to run a 3-day specialty program, just for the girls!

In addition, as part of the social philosophy of the event, there are group meals and
social events each day, giving everyone a chance to mix, mingle and make new friends.
Special events include the “Groomed Welcome Party”, presented by Hotham
Alpine Resort; the DNA Dinner Party @ Dinner Plain; and the final night “Disco
Snowball” presented by Gaydar.com.au.

Participants at the 2009 event where overwhelmed by the level of hospitality, superb
catering and general organisation of the event. Brian & Tom, a gay couple from Bondi,

The Pop Up Mardi Bar that started during the 2009 Mardi Gras and packed out every night returns bigger and longer in 2010.

The popular Same Same Mardi Bar will return for two weeks only at Nevermind around Mardi Gras time, starting on Wednesday February 24 and closing on Saturday March 6.

This time around, the return of the Mardi Bar is even more exciting with the announcement of two very special hosts for the two weeks of fun, adult entertainer Brent Corrigan and transsexual Amanda Lepore.

Brent Corrigan has squeezed more into his life than most 23 year-olds. He blazed into the porn world in underage controversy, and hasn’t stopped making headlines since then. From murder trials to countless adult awards, Brent’s story is as interesting as it is diverse. He’s currently running his own production company and forging a promising career in mainstream films appearing in Gus Van Sant’s Milk and a key role in Another Gay Sequel. Brent will be appearing at the Mardi Bar on Wednesday February 24 and Thursday February 25.

The second week of the Same Same Mardi Bar will be hosted by the number one transsexual in the world, Amanda Lepore. After her road-blocking Australian debut in November, Amanda is returning to the country so you can get to know her a little bit better.

This year’s Gallery has a special focus on portraits, reflecting on our Festival theme: “Mardi Gras’ History of the World”, so be sure to check out the interpretations by our artists! Also on display is the Mardi Gras Festival season artwork, by artist Scott Elk.

In 2010, with the support of the CAL Cultural Fund, the Gallery will be awarding one of the artists with the New Mardi Gras Gallery Art Prize – a $500 cash prize. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and announced on Wednesday 24 February, from 6.00pm, at a special launch event. Gallery audiences will also be able to vote for their favourite work, as part of SX’s Festival Favourite Award – a $400 cash prize. Take a moment, spend some time enjoying the visual delights and vote for what you think should be the Prize-winning work! The winner of the SX award will be announced after the last day of exhibition.

The History of My Queer Career. In 2010 we honour the history of the world’s largest competition for locally produced LGBT short films. For more then a decade and a half, My Queer Career has unearthed the latest and greatest in Aussie queer filmmaking, and launched some impressive careers. This special event will feature highlights from the first decade of the competition, including all-time audience favourites: Cousin by Adam Elliot, Exposed by Tony Ayres, Strap on Olympia by Cate Shortland, Urn by Miro Bilbrough, and Tales from the Powder Room by Darren Burgess.

2010 My Queer Career Competition. The Mardi Gras Film Festival will open with a fresh batch of new Australian LGBT shorts, a gala awards ceremony, and our fabulous opening night party over three levels at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place. This year’s My Queer Career Judges are Neil Armfield, Courtney Gibson, Amy Gebhardt and Andrew Mercado, and they will present their winning selection to you on the night.

An Englishman in New York. In this long awaited sequel to The Naked Civil Servant, John Hurt returns with his unparalleled portrait of Quentin Crisp. This legendary tale of Britain’s most notorious homosexual turned American socialite, reprises the Crisp chronicle as an older fey gentleman overwhelmed by a fast moving culture of gay and lesbian activism, political correctness and the horror of AIDS. Bursting with Crisp-quips, powerful performances and a host of impressive cameos, this festival highlight is a must for any queer culture aficionado.

Maggots and Men. In a cinematic first, a cast of over 100 Trans Men come together in recreation of the Konstadt uprising of 1921. This (mostly) silent feature paints an idyllic portrait of pre-Soviet sailors, languid and luscious to view, with stylish stylised execution. Think Battleship Potemkin meets Querelle with FTM sailor-bois rebelling against the Bolshevik state. Curious, aren’t you…?

Little Ashes. Before he was every teen’s favourite blood-sucker, Robert Pattinson played a troubled young Salvador Dali, in this poetic biopic on the love affair between the great painter and Garcia Lorca. The two men try to fight their affections as their social group (consisting of luminary Spanish contemporaries such as Luis Buñuel) become suspicious and the civil war escalates…

And Then Came Lola. Germany’s seminal split-narrative film, Run Lola Run, gets a San Franciscan reworking in what is already the most popular lesbian film of the year. Commitment-phobic Lola, has one chance to salvage her job and her relationship, but time is running out and a wrong turn or detour will cost her everything. Navigating an obstacle course by sprinting, hitching, flirting and fooling, she must do whatever it takes to keep her girlfriend from the arms of her hot and headstrong ex. The Fish Child Mysticism and epic love meet in this Latin American thriller. Lala is the privileged daughter of a powerful judge, in love with the family’s young maid, La Guayi. As the two prepare to run away together, Lala’s father is mysteriously murdered and La Guayi appears to be prime suspect. Lala soon finds herself negotiating in a world of poverty, crime and extraordinary danger, as she battle’s to save her lover.

Drool. In this queer comic take on Thelma and Louise, salvation takes unfamiliar forms, mostly, in the beautiful guise of a travelling cosmetics saleswoman. Imogene, from Kathy K Cosmetics, moves in next door to the Fleece family and into troubled housewife, Anora’s life. Forbidden lust, homicide and a cross-country road-chase ensue, as these two women fly, taking racism, the sexual awakenings of teenagers, patricide and lesbian love all in their stride.

Hollywood Je T’aime. Melancholic man-candy, Jerome, needs to escape Paris and the reminders of his boyfriend in the arms of another guy. Where to go to escape reality…? Los Angeles, of course. In true fish-out-of-water style, Jerome is soon living in a house of We-Ho oddballs, dating a drug dealer, taking acting lessons and auditioning for pizza commercials. But will this sensitive, lovelorn Frenchman survive the Hollywood machine?

Warm up for Mardi Gras with Fair Day

The biggest and best-loved community event of the Season, Fair Day will officially launch this year’s Mardi Gras and promises a fun, relaxed day out for all the family, even the pets!

Up to 70,000 routinely turn out to sit on the grass, browse the stalls, gorge themselves on the plethora of delicacies available at the stalls, have a few drinks, but most of all to catch up with old friends – and make some new ones.

Some of the Mardi Gras festival’s best talents will entertain the crowds from the main stage, along with some special guests. There will be plenty of colour away from the stages too. Look out for those who’ve come out to win the Mr and Mrs Fair Day competitions. Get in early to see the grand final of Mr. AXN, Australia’s next gay cover model. You’ll also see some incredibly creative group picnics – a real Fair Day tradition.

Fair Day is also where many of our community and groups get together. The bears have their tree; the dykes their bikes; the sports teams their tug-o-war and many more.

STIs nothing to be ashamed of: campaign

The Australian government has launched a national campaign on January 2nd 2010 after a worrying rise in chlamydia, HIV/AIDS and syphilis infections.
Young people who have contracted a sexually transmitted infection (STI) should not be ashamed, urges the new campaign encouraging Australians to get tested.
With the message: "STIs are spreading fast - always use a condom", it targets young people and encourages those who have had unprotected sex to see a doctor to discuss getting tested. Health Minister Nical Roxon stated : "The new year and holiday period is the season of parties and celebration - it's important to be aware of the risks of unprotected sex,"
Research conducted before phase one of the campaign in May and June 2009 revealed that Australians are not well informed about the benefits of condom use, Ms Roxon said.
It found heterosexuals mainly use condoms to prevent pregnancy, while gay men are becoming complacent about the risk of HIV.
The campaign, which will also target Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths living in outer regional and remote communities, urges people not to be ashamed if they have an STI.
"This can prevent them seeking help and treatment," Ms Roxon said, adding that early detection and treatment is important."If left untreated, STIs can have serious, lasting health implications."

Recent health surveys show an alarmingly high number of senior gays would rather commit suicide than risk abuse from a ''prudish and conservative'' aged health-care system. Australia's ageing ''gay pride'' baby boomers face an increased risk of social isolation, depression and suicide because of a lack of supportive health-care services, a Senate inquiry has heard.
An estimate of more than 37,200 gay men and lesbians will be affected by dementia over the next 20 years, but aged-care policies fail to recognise their specific health, social, legal and financial needs, according to a recent report by Alzheimer's Australia
It said gay seniors feared health workers ''will judge them, pity them, avoid physical contact, harass them, treat them as an object of curiosity, betray confidences, provide poor quality services or reject them''.
Launching the recent Alzheimer's Australia report, Justice Michael Kirby said that many of these special needs ''may be traced to the much higher levels of loneliness suffered by sexual minorities''.
The Senate Community Affairs Committee's inquiry into suicide in Australia shows some severe examples of harassment of gay seniors by health-care staff. For example: the director of a day-care centre ordering a gay senior to ''wear latex gloves at all times or leave'', in the mistaken belief he was an AIDS risk…

The Great Firewall of Australia

The freshly elected Australian government of Rudd in 2008 promised to improve the Internet in Australia and has put 44 million dollars aside to create better broadband for all. Broadband minister Stephen Conroy now has reserved 43 million dollars to make Internet safer for Australia’s children. A mandatory filter, to be installed by all Internet service providers, would block websites that are flagged as “inappropriate”. The senator wants to refuse Australians Internet access to child pornography, sexual violence and other content that has been refused classification (RC). Nobody in their right mind would approve of the first two, and since they are illegal anyway they should be taken off the net, no problem. But a lot of things are illegal in Australia that are legal in other countries, like euthanasia and cannabis. Websites with info on these topics or where they are simply being discussed will become inaccessible and will take Australia back to the dark ages and it will the laughing stock of other democracies.

The trickiest bit is the Refused Classification list. According to the minister this list would include bestiality, child sex abuse, depictions of drug use and sexual violence as well as content identified by an unspecified “public complaints mechanism”. And that means that anybody (e.g. Family First, gay haters) who complains about the content of a certain website can get it put on the list of forbidden sites… So far about 1300 sites are on that list, of a total of a zillion websites worldwide and more added every minute. Good job Conroy!

The next step towards the Ozzie Firewall will be the introduction of legislative amendments to the Broadcasting Service Act during the autumn 2010 parliamentary sittings, followed by a twelve month process of implementation…

A total waste of tax payers money: the filters are inaccurate, slow down the speed, it’s easy to work around them but most importantly: freedom of speech and freedom to get information are in terrible danger. So write to your MP!

Mardi Gras 2010 Season Guide Now Available for your Party Planning

New Mardi Gras launched their 2010 festival guide revealing a spectacular line up for next year’s season. The much loved favourites are back again – Fair Day, Hats Off, Parade, Harbour Party and Party. Big names for next year’s festival include Whitney Houston, Spencer Tunick’s The Base, and John Waters’ This Filthy World.

A new party called Parade Carnival which will take place after the Parade at Entertainment Quarter. It’s free for Parade participants, Mardi Gras volunteers and Members and will take place at the Show Ring, Dome and Forum. Line up and ticket information is yet to be announced.

The Pool Party will be back this year at The Ivy pool. Queer Thinking is a new aspect of the festival which is a fusion of academia, literature and ideas, bringing together the queer community’s best creative and academic talent.

For the internationals cruising into town on the Atlantis ship, Harbour Party will be their chance to let their hair down after the Parade. Next year’s DJ line up includes Wayne G, Paul Heron, Paul Goodyear, Sista P, Kitty Glitter and Jason Barry, spread over two levels.

Mardi Gras Party will cap off the festival on March 6 from 10pm. The DJ line up includes David Guetta, Bimbo Jones, Dan Murphy, Jake Kilby, Alan Thompson, Mark Murphy, Sveta, Mandy Rollins, Ben Drayton, GI Jode and Steve Sonius. 2009 Sydney’s New Year’s Eve - Awaken the Spirit

Nowhere on earth does New Year like Sydney. With our glorious harbour, exotic national parks and party-hungry public, Sydney is the undisputed New Year's Eve capital of the world. And this year the world will watch in awe as our biggest and best show yet is unleashed and Sydney's spirit for the year ahead is awakened! 

The countdown to midnight begins at 5 pm with pre-show entertainment on the Harbour in the form of a sries of aerial flyovers from a fleet of Three Pitts Specials, De Havilland Tiger Moths, Boeing Stearman and Beechcraft Staggerwing. 

As is traditional in Gadigal country, an Indigenous Smoking Ceremony and an Acknowledgement of Country will follow at 8 pm. This is where our traditional custodians take to the Harbour in five indigenous vessels and stir up what Rhoda Roberts, creative director of the 2009 NYE, calls an awakening of "that spirit within our land, water, sky and people". This year it will also serve to ‘call up' the first reveal of the Bridge Effect with a series of fireworks firings.

At 9 pm the spectacular Family Fireworks and much-loved Harbour of Light Parade will ignite. This year's stunning display of pyrotechnics has been choreographed to a synchronised music soundtrack from much-loved children's movies and pop songs. 

Following that 15 minute flurry will be the Harbour of Light Parade at 9.15 pm where a flotilla of 55 vessels illuminated by rope-lit decorative lighting that will parade around the Harbour, followed at 10 pm by the cannon blasts across the water to Awaken our Spirit for the year ahead.

Finally the moment we've all been waiting for: the tolling of the new year when Sydney bursts the night sky open

with the epic Midnight Fireworks display to welcome 2010.

GLBT RETIREMENT VILLAGE IS COMING TO VICTORIA

Construction of Australia's first much anticipated GLBT retirement village is likely to begin next year.

The Linton Estate is a $26 million retirement village aimed primarily at gay, lesbian and transgender seniors. Plans for the project were first submitted to city officials in 2000 but a weak economy had stalled the project, developer Peter Dickson said.

The development is to be located about an hour's drive from Melbourne – Australia's second largest city behind Sydney – in the rural town of Ballan.

The village is expected to include a community center surrounded by 120 single-story living units. Amenities include a gym, pool, bowling greens, tennis court and club house.

The Linton Estate is being marketed as a GLBT retirement community; however, sexual orientation is not a deciding factor.

“There's a fair number of straight people that want to live there,” developer Dickson says. (who wouldn't...)

Midsumma Melbourne Launches 2010 Program

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Member for Prahran Tony Lupton were amongst the guests invited to launch the 2010 Midsumma Festival program. The event was held at Collins Quarter in Melbourne’s CBD and featured the accapella songbirds The Nymphs, as well as Tina Del Twiste, the character creation of cabaret superstar Wes Snelling.

Adam Lowe from the Adam Lowe Group who manages the running of the Midsumma festival, said in his opening speech, “The 2010 Midsumma Festival program represents our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities… and beyond because it is made by the community and artists and event organizers, often self funded, for the community… This program certainly adds to the argument that Melbourne is Australia’s queer cultural capital…”

The 2010 Midsumma Festival program includes a truly diverse bevy of events across Visual Arts, Performing arts, Cabaret, Live Music, Literature, Spoken word and even sporting events. Not to be left out are more social, party and community events than you could poke a stick at! Even the ambigious, abstract but sexy cover drew many comments and has been called a wonderful success.

Signature events Midsumma Carnival, T-Dance, and Pride March continue to premiere festival highlights. Other highlights include Pink Shorts (Midsumma’s queer short play competition), dance work Nex-us, Gentlemen Prefer Blokes (by Courtney Act and Trevor Ashley), and an exciting and powerful Queer City (Queer Public Art program). And a wonderful tribute exhibition of two decades of costumes and images of transsexual drag artist Vivian St James who passed away recently.

Sydney 2010 Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Programme Released

With the launch of the 2010 Mardi Gras Season Guide, organisers have unveiled an event-packed week between the Parade and Party, which includes a new free event – The Parade Carnival.

To be held at the conclusion of the Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, February 27, The Parade Carnival is a free party for NMG members, Parade participants and volunteers. Taking place at the Show Ring, Dome and Forum, it will offer attendees the chance to kick up their heels and get up close with the floats and costumes. A limited number of tickets will be made available to the public.

The high-octane week continues with Harbour ’10 at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair on Sunday, February 28; Spencer Tunick’s debut Sydney installation The Base on Monday, March 1; and a Fag Tag event in Manly on Tuesday, March 2.

Other events include John Waters’s one-man show at the Opera House, This Filthy World (March 2); Mardi Gras’ ‘Dinner at the Zoo’ (March 3); Burt Bacharach with the Sydney Symphony (March 4); the return of the Drag Races at Bondi Beach (March 5); and a barbeque at Tamarama Surf Club hosted by Lifesaver with Pride on the day of the Party (March 6).

The week culminates with the Mardi Party on March 6, followed by official after-party, Toy Box at Luna Park on March 7.

Avenue Q comes to Adelaide

Six years on Broadway, three in London, and six months and counting in Australia, Avenue Q comes to Adelaide in January 2010.

Described as an R-rated Muppet Show, Avenue Q has been a hit around the world. Avenue Q involves a cast of eleven humans and a rather larger number of puppets, led by Princeton, a new college graduate who’s come to New York City to try his luck. Luck, alas, is in short supply, and he moves to the lowly Avenue Q and encounters its many weird and wonderful residents. Avenue Q's puppets communicate a really useful message, which is, you’re in your 30s, and you’re dissatisfied with your life, so get the f*** on with it! And it has a great message about inclusiveness and tolerance.

The Peel Turns 21!

According to Peel Hotel Proprietor, Tom McFeely, The Peel is more than a pub, it’s a family. The Peel was the centre of controversy a couple of years ago after winning an exemption which allowed it to refuse entry to women and heterosexuals. According to McFeely, the Peel is a place where everyone is welcome, but first and foremost it’s a pub for gay men, where they can come and feel safe and socialise with like-minded people.

For The Peel’s 21st birthday McFeely is bringing in a team of male pole-dancers from Sydney as part of the celebrations. There will be other surprises too. The Peel's upstairs section os currently gutted for renovation, after which it will become a separate space in its own right. Clearly the Peel is positioning itself well for adulthood.

McFeely is keen to keep the place running with it's own freindly management style for teh next 21 years. Happy Birthday, Peel. And here's to 21 more fabulous years from the Gay Traveller team.

George Michael goes 'outside'

George Michael might be part of Mardi Gras 2010, after it was announced that he will tour Australia next year, and that his original dates were pushed back to co-incide with Mardi Gras. It’s George Michael’s first Aussie tour since 1988, and he’ll only be playing in Sydney, on February 26, and Perth, on February 20.

Promoter Paul Dainty released a statement saying, “It is thrilling to bring George Michael to Australia again, he toured here on the Faith tour in 1988. He is a consummate performer and will deliver a stunning show to his fans who have waited 22 years to see him perform in Australia”.

Michael’s last shows were in 2007 and 2008 for the 25 Live Tour which has just been released on DVD through Sony Music. Sydney and Perth get ready for George Michael's brief appearance - which is sure to be a sellout.

Museum of Brisbane LGBT History Exhibition needs your help

You can help make next year’s Museum of Brisbane LGBT History Exhibition a success. Now is your opportunity to share them with the public your fabulous fashion, and all sorts of memorabilia with the Museum of Brisbane (MOB) for its upcoming LGBT History Exhibition scheduled for June-November 2010.

The exhibition will be held at the new MOB gallery space at 157 Ann Street, celebrating the diversity of the LGBT community. It’s the first exhibition of its kind to be held in a major Australian city. Its focus is the history of the LGBT community, documenting our lives and experiences growing up and coming out in Brisbane. There are so many stories to tell and the curators hope to highlight the significance of LGBT history to the wider community through these stories, as well as objects and the visual arts.

MOB is working in partnership with the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) and the State Library of Queensland to bring this exhibition to fruition. But your help is also needed.

Picture a crowd of people who are seemingly going about their business, in a crowded public place, then suddenly engage in a tightly synchronized group dance routine. The trick to the perfect flash mob is to make this well choreographed set up look completely natural so passers by don’t suspect a thing until everyone is suddenly busting the same moves to a grooving beat.

DJ and promoter Dan Murphy enlisted the help of Joyce Maynge and 100 would be flash mobbers on Bondi Beach recently for a home grown flash mob to a camp dance mix medley. The routine went down so well, it has soared through Youtube with 100,000 views in the first three days of its post, and has even been tweeted by Kylie Minogue herself. The Pop Princes tweeted “"Dear Bondi-Flash-Mob. Next time can you start or finish with Slow?” Keep an eye out for further flasmob events organized by the Rock Your Box crew this summer.

Tassie Top Travel Destination

Last year Tasmania’s Bay of Fires was named the world’s hottest travel destination by Lonely Planet. Now the Apple Isle has been nominated in the number two spot for the world’s top nine emerging gay travel destinations, pipped only by Punta del Este in Uruguay.

The list, compiled by Hotel Travel Club, looks at cities and regions not normally associated with gay travel and shines a rainbow spotlight on Nova Scotia, Indianapolis, Lisbon, Shanghai, Nashville, Mexico City, and San Luis Obispo County, California.

According to the Hotel Travel Club blog, Tasmania has come along way in the last few years in welcoming gay and lesbian travellers. Over the past few years, locals have put aside their conservative views and have welcomed lesbian and gay residents and travellers alike.

Tasmania celebrated its two-week TasPride Festival recently, attracting visitors from across the country.

Flash Mob with a difference hits Bondi Beach

Sydney Dance Co New Offering

It’s been a tough couple of years for Sydney Dance Company. But as revered guest choreographer Kenneth Kvarnstrom, who has created a new worked for the troupe, says, the dancers are a resilient lot.

When Rafael Bonachela took the reins of Sydney Dance Company as Artistic Director at the beginning of the year, he announced that the work of guest choreographers from around the world would make up a significant proportion of the company’s creative output. True to this word, Kenneth Kvarnstrom’s Mercury will premiere next week at Sydney Theatre.

Sydney Dance Company has been through a tough couple of years. The retirement of co-artistic directors Graeme Murphy and Janet Vernon after three decades at the helm in 2006 was cruelly followed by the tragic death of newly-appointed artistic director Tania Liedtke the following year. As the company again went on a world-wide search for Liedtke’s replacement, 2008 saw three new works by three guest choreographers. But the dancers, Kvarnstrom says, are very resilient.

Finnish-born Kvarnstrom is one of Europe’s most revered and cutting-edge choreographers. For several years he was the director of the Helsinki City Theatre Dance Company and the esteemed Dansens Hus in Stockholm. He now heads his own company, K Kvarnstrom and Co, and has created works for Gothenburg Ballet, Helsinki Dance Company and Finnish National Ballet. Mercury is his Australian debut.

Like Bonachela, Kvarnstrom does not create narrative works. But physically their choreography is very different. “We don’t tell stories, so in that sense we’re both abstract,” he muses. “I think we both like to convey different emotional states to an audience, and I like to work with the subconscious. Rafael is very technical. I work in a more circular way, throwing the energy out, but also catching it back.

Every year we look forward to putting on this most prestigious event for the GLBTIQ communities and open-minded people of Adelaide… but this year has truly been special for us. We’ve managed to secure as a venue the holy grail of SA Sleaze, The Old Adelaide Gaol (Jail)!

Glasshouse to Return to Full Time Lesbian Venue Again

Melbourne's iconic Glasshouse Hotel is set to return as a full-time lesbian venue after a change in management. Libby and her partner Rachel will return the venue to its roots as a full-time women’s venue.

With Libby’s 15 years experience in hospitality and Rachel’s business background, the pair plan to put their own stamp on the Glasshouse, starting with the introduction of pub meals in December, as they believe what's missing on the scene is a place where gay families can come and eat.

Libby also scotched rumours the venue might suddenly become staunchly women-only, saying the approach is to create a gay space where everyone, including men, gay and straight, are welcome.

Renovations are taking place, with air conditioning and more toilets being installed.

The Glasshouse will extend its opening hours from 11am–1am during the week and all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Sculpture by the Sea 2009 is underway, taking place at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Take the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk to see one of the most beautiful beaches in the world taken over by amazing sculptures.

The Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize went to May Barrie, a 91-year-old Australian artist. The Transfield Kinetic Artist Prize went to American artist Tim Prentice. If you're in the Sydney area, you must check out this inspiring event.

Tas Pride Starts this Weekend

The TasPride Festival, Tasmania’s arts and cultural celebration for the GLBTIQ community, kicks off this Saturday with a Halloween opening party at Flamingos Dance Bar in Hobart.

The festival’s two-week program is a diverse mix of live music, picnics, stand-up, drag shows, bingo and film screenings. The opening party’s Halloween theme is The Bear, The Bitch and The Wardrobe. In keeping with the Narnia-esque theme, partygoers will enter the venue via a giant wardrobe filled with coats. Entertainment will be provided by Dolly Diamond, a host of DJs, and surprise special guests.

Revellers who come dressed as their favourite fantasy character will be in with the chance to win a swag of prizes.
