Huon Bush Retreats has adopted a small and cute new orphan; Lucy, the Rufous Wallaby.

Lucy’s mother was killed in a road incident in the Huon Valley area. She was delivered to us by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service at a very young age and we are taking on the responsibility of raising her, as a recognised and experienced wildlife carer premise, to ensure she has the best chance in life.

We are in a fortunate position to be able to hand raise Lucy. Due to the natural bushland surrounding the property, it makes the transition period of release much easier. As Lucy ages, she will be free to come and go via our cat flaps and venture outside the building to explore the surrounding bush!

We estimate Lucy is about 5 months old and were just furred when rescued from her mother’s pouch. Her tiny body is just 20 centimetres long and tail only 15 centimetres, so she still has plenty of growing to do - a Rufous Wallaby (or Tasmanian Pademelon), grows to a head and body length of 60cm and a tail length of 41cm. The average weight for males is 7kg and females, 4kg.

Luckily for Lucy, there are plenty of other Rufous Wallabies in our reserve and we are accepting the fact that one day she may not decide come back home!

If you’re planning to stay at Huon Bush Retreats, now would be a great time to meet Lucy in her infant stages.

There's no need be afraid of winter!

Dover is magnificent in the colder months. It's well sheltered from the elements and a spectacular sight when Adamson's Peak (pictured) is snow-capped.

Nearby there's a range of activities you can do even if the air is brisk - a stroll along the local beaches, some fishing, or tastings/morning tea at nearby boutique winery, St Imre Vineyard. Further abroad there's also a range of short and long walks in the clean air; Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs are only a 30 minute drive away and it's only an hour to the very end of Australia's roads, Cockle Creek.

Driftwood Cottages has the perfect range of options to enjoy the indoors and outdoors for the romantic couple or travelling family. Choose from a comfortable studio cottage, a spacious ocean view cottage and a beach house with its own hot tub on the balcony. Our best value winter escape is Castaway Cottage with a 3 night rate of $135 per night for up to four people.

All of Driftwood's rooms are part of the $10 Winter Sale.

What a way to enjoy a winter's day or night - a glass of wine next to a wood fire!

The Peninsula Experience is an ideal winter destination. With a wonderful northerly aspect, expansive double-glazed windows, a cosy wood heater and electric wall heaters in all rooms, you won't feel the cold here.

Our walking track network on the surrounding bushland is expanding and improving with good progress. Pictured is Paul from Huon Valley Escapes, on the newly completed picnic setting on the scenic Blue Rope track, with commanding views over Port Esperance. Paul's also working with a past resident of the property on an informative brochure for The Peninsula that will explain each of the walking tracks, the flora and fauna along the way and also some history on the homestead, the farm and the indigenous inhabitants of the land.

Now is the time to get to The Peninsula Experience during our $10 Winter Sale. At only $305 per night for two people
